Flying First to Mumbai: the route landscape
Mumbai rewards the same routing logic as Delhi, with one advantage: the Gulf hubs sit even more conveniently on the great-circle path. Emirates connects its dozen US First Class gateways through Dubai to Mumbai on a three-hour final leg — frequently flown by First-equipped 777s, so the whole journey can be spent in the front cabin. Qatar Airways mirrors the play through Doha, Etihad through Abu Dhabi, and SWISS offers a quieter European alternative via Zurich, its A330s carrying a small First cabin over the Alps and Arabian Sea into Mumbai.
Air India and United fly nonstop from Newark and New York, and some Air India 777s carry First — but as with Delhi, the product varies by airframe mid-retrofit, and we counsel clients accordingly. Mumbai's Terminal 2 is a genuine showpiece, its art program the largest in any airport, and a booked meet-and-greet moves First arrivals through immigration swiftly even at the 1 a.m. bank when most long-haul flights land. From there it is thirty to sixty minutes south, traffic depending, to the sea-facing suites of Colaba and Marine Drive.
The best First Class airlines for Mumbai
Via Dubai with a three-hour onward hop, often on First-equipped 777s — front-cabin the entire way.
Doha routing with the Al Safwa First lounge breaking the journey at its midpoint.
Abu Dhabi connection, with the A380 Apartment on select US legs and a short flight across the Arabian Sea.
The European alternative: an intimate First cabin from six US cities via Zurich, continuing to Mumbai.
When to go
November through February is Mumbai at its finest — dry, relatively cool, and socially in full swing, with fares peaking over Diwali and the Christmas–New Year diaspora rush. The monsoon arrives emphatically from June through September; it has its own drama but disrupts plans, and premium fares fall accordingly. October and March are the underrated shoulders: good weather, gala calendars warming up, and noticeably easier First Class availability.
Arriving well
Book the Indian e-visa early and a Terminal 2 meet-and-greet always — most US-connecting flights land after midnight, and a handler makes the difference between fifteen minutes and ninety. South Mumbai holds the icons: the Taj Mahal Palace overlooking the Gateway of India, the Oberoi on Marine Drive; in the north, the St. Regis and Four Seasons serve Bandra and the studios. Respect the traffic — cross-city meetings need generous buffers, and the Sea Link at sunset is the drive worth timing deliberately.
